It’s a new year, but at the core, I’m still the same Jil. Instead of resolutions, I decided to write a personal strategic plan. This is a plan for my life in all areas, spiritual, personal, physical, financial, social, and career. But I decided to do it BHAG! What is BHAG you ask?
The term ‘Big Hairy Audacious Goal’ was proposed by James Collins and Jerry Porras in their 1994 book entitled Built to Last: Successful Habits of Visionary Companies. If you haven’t read it, try adding it to your reading list.
A Big Hairy Audacious Goal (BHAG) is a strategic business statement similar to a vision statement which is created to focus an organization (or person) on a single medium-long term -wide goal which is audacious, likely to be externally questionable, but not internally regarded as impossible.
So for 2016, I have some goals that many may think are impossible. I’m not sharing my goals with many. I won’t be posting about the progress but as they come to be, you’ll know!
I promise you, they are BIG! Below are a few notable examples of BHAG’s that came true.
JFK’s Moon Challenge: This nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the earth.
Facebook: To make the world more open and connected.
Google: Organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.
Microsoft: A computer on every desk and in every home.
I’ve made a decision that this will be my best year yet and guess what, it will be! Whether every goal happens this year or if they are still in progress this time next year. Either way, I am going to live and love life and you should do the same!
